As artists, we are blessed with natural talents that can be powerful tools for change. It’s our responsibility to use these gifts not just for personal gain, but to uplift the underprivileged and make a positive impact on the world. Too often, we see creatives compromising their integrity and artistic values for financial reward. However, I believe there’s a more fulfilling path – one that marries our artistic expression with social responsibility.

This belief has led me to launch “Hip-Hop Harmony,” an innovative 8-week program that’s set to begin this calendar school year. After successful pilot runs in various New York City high schools, we’re excited to bring this initiative to a broader audience. The program will launch this Fall at my alma mater, Hillcrest High School in Jamaica, New York. Hillcrest High School has produced many prominent alumni, including esteemed actors Fran Drescher and Ray Romano, as well as the current New York City Department of Education Chancellor, David C. Banks. Hip-Hop Harmony is rooted in social-emotional learning and utilizes the restorative circles model. Our goal is to create a safe space where students can resolve conflicts, feel truly seen and heard, and develop a deep sense of respect for themselves and others.

The program is just one facet of a larger vision. I’m proud to announce the formation of “The Freeman Foundation for the Arts,” a nonprofit organization with a mission to empower and elevate underprivileged and marginalized artists worldwide. We aim to foster creativity, innovation, and cultural exchange by breaking down barriers, providing resources, and creating opportunities for diverse voices in the global creative community to be heard and celebrated.

Hip-Hop Harmony, as the Foundation’s inaugural program, has already garnered significant support. We’re honored to have the endorsement of New York City Council Speaker Adrienne E. Adams. She has committed to offering internships to students who complete the program and express interest in pursuing careers in politics. These internships will provide invaluable opportunities for young people to serve their communities by addressing disparities and injustices while promoting equal opportunities for all – themes that resonate deeply with the essence of hip-hop culture.

As artists, we have the power to inspire, to challenge the status quo, and to be a voice for those who often go unheard. By staying true to our artistic values and using our talents to uplift others, we can create ripples of positive change that extend far beyond our immediate circles. The Freeman Foundation for the Arts and initiatives like Hip-Hop Harmony are just the beginning. I invite fellow artists, educators, and community leaders to join us in this mission to create a more equitable and empowered world through the transformative power of art.

Let’s commit to using our gifts not just for personal success, but for the betterment of our communities and the world at large. When we align our artistic integrity with social responsibility, we unlock the true potential of our creativity to make a lasting, positive impact.
