Actor and filmmaker Edwin Freeman’s critically acclaimed documentary “Beats & Lyrics” is set to be screened at the 9th Annual Hip-Hop Film Festival. The event will take place at the Legendary Apollo Theater on Sunday, August 18th at 12 PM, followed by an exciting Q&A session with Freeman and cast members.

The screening marks the culmination of Freeman’s year-long campaign for his documentary, which was created as a tribute to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop music. Hip-Hop, born on August 11, 1973, has profoundly influenced global culture for half a century.

After the screening, attendees will have the opportunity to engage with Freeman and notable cast members, including:

  • Emmy Award-winning poet, and rapper Caridad “La Bruja” De La Luz
  • Legendary Hip-Hop producer and DJ Callie Ban
  • Burgeoning Brooklyn drill rapper Pretty Dij

Adding to the significance of the event, the Hip-Hop Film Festival will be honoring female Hip-Hop icon MC Lyte with a lifetime achievement award on the same day.

For those unable to attend the festival, “Beats & Lyrics” is currently streaming on YouTube Movies & TV, Prime Video, and Tubi.

Freeman, best known for his acting roles in the blockbuster movie “Notorious” and the hit series “Marvel’s Luke Cage,” is not resting on his laurels. His next documentary project, “Diary of the Lost Boyz: The Spigg Nice Story,” is set to begin production this fall and is slated for release next year.

The Hip-Hop Film Festival is run by its Black female founder, C R Capers, through her non-profit organization, “Harlem Film House.” The organization’s mission is to provide access and opportunity to creative entrepreneurs in underserved communities around the world. Harlem Film House aims to empower creatives from marginalized backgrounds and help them bring their ideas to life through various programs and projects, offering the resources they need to succeed.
