Friday, Baltimore Mayor Bernard C. “Jack” Young (above) announced Tamika C. Gauvin as the new director for the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice, effective December 17, 2019.

Ms. Gauvin holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Chicago and a Master’s in City Planning, City Development and Design from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

She joins the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice after spending two years as Program Manager and Deputy Director of the Baltimore Innovation Team (i-team) in the Mayor’s Office of Performance & Innovation (OPI).

As part of her work with the Office of Performance & Innovation, Gauvin co-created data-driven solutions, based on data analysis and human-centered design research, with agency stakeholders and residents. The Baltimore i-team has applied this methodology to the issue of Baltimore Police Department (BPD) recruitment and hiring, working in close partnership with the BPD Recruitment Unit. The initiatives co-created with BPD, and most notably, the implementation of an online application and a digital recruitment marketing campaign have increased applications to the Department by 400%. At the time of her departure from OPI, the team was starting on two new focus areas: engagement and education strategies for residents to improve city cleanliness and early interventions for youth who commit non-violent misdemeanors to help set them on a positive life trajectory.
