Audiences got a surprise during screenings of Fantastic Four: First Steps. The premiere of the trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash was held just before the Marvel movie, with its new imagery and heavy sequences blowing the minds of the fans. The director of the third film, James Cameron, did it with his grandeur as usual. He went back to Pandora with a heavier and more complex story.
The trailer focused on Jake and Neytiri’s grief. They’re still mourning the loss of their son, Neteyam, from The Way of Water. Their pain fuels their fight to survive. This time, they face new Na’vi enemies. Varang leads the Ash People, a volcanic clan that rejects the Na’vi deity Eywa.
The Ash People and a New Pandora Threat
The Ash People rise from the volcanic heartlands. They live near erupting mountains and use fire in battle. They’re a new take on tribal identity. They reject Pandora’s balance. Unlike the Omaticaya and Metkayina, they want domination, not harmony.
Colonel Quaritch returns in his Na’vi avatar. He’s more dangerous now. He knows Earth’s weapons and Na’vi strength. His transformation is physical and ideological.
We see his soldiers marching with Ash warriors. Varang commands with ferocity, never stopping in battle. Her troops wield molten projectiles and ride flame-colored beasts through scorched earth.

New Clans and Higher Stakes
Not all Na’vi are fire. New clans are seen briefly in the trailer. They’re peaceful. Cameron introduced them as potential allies.
Zoe Saldaña confirmed the Wind Traders at CinemaCon 2025. She said they hold knowledge and history lost to the modern Na’vi. These groups could unite the fractured species. Their tech shows an evolved side of Pandora’s culture. The RDA is back in full force. They’re on Pandora. Ships are landing, and mechs are walking on the ground. In the trailer, Jake is fighting RDA soldiers in a burning forest. It looks like full-on war across multiple environments.
Jake’s Family and the Personal War
The Sully family is the emotional core of the film. Spider, their adopted human son, is struggling with internal conflict. His past with Quaritch complicates his loyalties.
In the trailer, Spider escapes through lava tubes and ash clouds. His actions could change the outcome of future battles. We’ll see his true allegiance tested. He’s navigating between human and Na’vi identity. Cameron keeps Neteyam’s memory alive through flashbacks.
Cinematic Brilliance and Technical Evolution
James Cameron is pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in cinema. His team has created stunning sequences underwater, in the air and inside erupting volcanoes. Each environment adds to the overall conflict.
We see lava waterfalls, black forests and crystal caverns. Pandora is darker and more varied. Floating mountains are still there, but they contrast with the new grim landscapes. Cameron has introduced mutated creatures adapted to heat and sulfur. Molten-skinned panthers and winged fire serpents.
Returning Cast and New Characters
Sam Worthington is back as Jake. Zoe Saldana is more emotional than ever as Neytiri. Sigourney Weaver is more central to the Na’vi spiritual mystery as Kiri. Stephen Lang is more menacing than ever as Quaritch.
Kate Winslet is back as Ronal, a Metkayina elder. Michelle Yeoh is a scientist caught between duty and conscience. Edie Falco is back as General Ardmore, leading the RDA’s new assault. David Thewlis is a wise Na’vi elder.
Oona Chaplin debuts as Varang, leader of the Ash People. She’s terrifying in the trailer. Her eyes burn with conviction. She speaks softly but with deadly intent. Chaplin’s role could change how villains work in the series.
Music, Silence, and Atmosphere
The trailer uses sound as a weapon and a guide. Composer Simon Franglen is back. He scores silence with dread and action with percussive force. The trailer starts with a hum. It builds to volcanic fury as fire rains on Pandora.
Voices drop out. We hear heartbeats, fire cracks and metal screams. One scene shows Neytiri whispering to Eywa in the smoke. The silence holds for 5 seconds. Then a shockwave hits. Cameron uses timing to ratchet up the tension and shock the audience.
