The novel coronavirus crisis has highlighted the consistent disparities around health care delivery in our Black and Brown communities.

It has been said that the coronavirus may be colorblind, but the people and the institutions that have to deliver services to our Black and Brown communities are not colorblind. Race still matters! The numbers are very alarming and very clear. More Black and Brown people are dying in our community in our homes, hospitals, homeless shelters and in our nursing homes.

Regarding the Linden Center Nursing Home on Linden Blvd, in Brooklyn, where workers are saying there are more dead bodies than what the facility has the capacity for, we have contacted the Governor’s office and they are working with the Department of Health to address the situation at the Linden Center Nursing Home.

We want action now.

We know that historically, as it relates to Black and Brown communities data have been withheld, delayed and skewed to mask the reality of how our communities are shortchanged and underserved. We are demanding that daily reporting include data on the number of deaths, by facility. Additionally, we are demanding that the Governor establish a protocol for the timely transfer of the remains of the deceased.

We are going to remain vigilant and we shall continue to keep putting the pressure on the Governor and the Mayor to address the racial disparity by increasing resources to our neglected communities. We will leave no stone unturned in demanding that our hospitals, homeless shelters, people in our neighborhood and our nursing homes especially be prioritized as it relates to resources. We demand an emergency response team be put in place to address the racial disparities in Black and Brown communities.
