In New York City, the United Nations’ Security Council is meeting, in a emergency session, to discuss Israel’s decision to widen its war-making actions, called a “dangerous escalation” by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, inside Gaza–amid an unfolding starvation crisis.

Ambassador James Kariuki, the United Kingdom’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, said that the UK “requested this meeting alongside Denmark, France, Greece and Slovenia in response to the Government of Israel’s decision to further escalate its military operations in Gaza.”
Kariuki said Israel’s decision is a “path to more bloodshed.”
“As my Prime Minister said, this decision is wrong, and we urge the Government of Israel to reconsider immediately. Expanding military operations will do nothing to bring an end to this conflict. It will not secure the release of the hostages. It will only deepen the suffering of Palestinian civilians in Gaza. This is not a path to resolution, it is a path to more bloodshed.”
Ramesh Rajasingham, Head of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Geneva and Director of the Coordination Division, in his briefing to the Council, echoed the statements made by Kariuki.
“I am extremely concerned over the prolonged conflict and further human toll that is likely to unfold following the Government of Israel’s decision to expand military operations in Gaza…“This marks a grave escalation in a conflict that has already inflicted unimaginable suffering.”
Rajasingham also talked about the killings of humanitarian workers attempting to bring aid relief to Palestinians.
“A grim milestone has also been crossed in the humanitarian community. As we approach World Humanitarian Day, we must insist on the protection of all aid workers.”
Miroslav Jenča, Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia and the Americas, said Israel’s escalation could have “consequences beyond Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory.”
“The latest decision by the Government of Israel risks igniting another horrific chapter in this conflict, with potential consequences beyond Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory…This is yet another dangerous escalation of the conflict. For now, we have limited official details of Israel’s military plans. If these plans are implemented, they will likely trigger another calamity in Gaza, reverberating across the region and causing further forced displacement, killings, and destruction – compounding the unbearable suffering of the population.”
