NEW YORK — In a city where culture thrives on every corner yet remains frustratingly out of reach for many, The Freeman Foundation for the Arts’ ArtSpark NYC program is working to bridge that divide. Recently, our program had the privilege of taking a group of talented emerging artists to the Whitney Museum of American Art, where they experienced some of the institution’s most celebrated exhibitions.

The Whitney visit represented more than just an afternoon at a museum—it was an investment in the creative futures of artists who too often find themselves locked out of spaces that should be theirs to explore and learn from. As we walked through galleries showcasing everything from vibrant Pop Art to powerful contemporary installations addressing race, identity, and American culture, I watched these artists absorb inspiration that will undoubtedly influence their own creative journeys.

The exhibits we explored offered particularly resonant perspectives for our community. From works that challenge traditional narratives of American identity to pieces that celebrate the complexity of Black and Brown experiences, the Whitney’s collection speaks directly to the stories we carry and the art we create. One artist in our group stood transfixed before a powerful mixed-media piece exploring cultural duality—a moment that reminded me why this work matters so profoundly.

As the Founder and Executive Director of The Freeman Foundation for the Arts, I’ve spent my career in entertainment—from working on the blockbuster film Notorious to the hit Marvel series Luke Cage, and directing critically acclaimed documentaries like Modern Day Slavery and Beats & Lyrics: The Essence of Rap. Through all of this work, one truth has remained constant: access to cultural spaces and artistic education shouldn’t be a luxury reserved for those who can afford it.

That’s precisely why we created ArtSpark NYC.

Our mission is simple but urgent: to dismantle the barriers that keep marginalized artists from reaching their full potential. We do this through education, funding, mentorship, advocacy, and transformative cultural experiences exactly like our Whitney Museum visit. Every program we offer—whether it’s all-expenses-paid tickets to performances, museum access, or networking opportunities—is designed to ensure that underprivileged artists, particularly those from African American and Afro-Latino communities, have the same opportunities as their more privileged peers.

The response to our Whitney experience has been overwhelming, with participating artists expressing how the visit opened new creative pathways and reinforced their sense of belonging in the wider artistic community. These are the moments that fuel our work and remind us that representation in cultural spaces isn’t just about who’s on the walls—it’s about who gets to walk through the doors.

Art has the power to transform lives, but only if we all have access to it. At The Freeman Foundation for the Arts, we’re committed to making sure that power reaches every corner of our community.

Let’s create, inspire, and rise together.
