On September 13 Black Star News published an article “Activists Vow to Block NY City Council from Abandoning Chokehold Ban.” One sentence in the article read, “During a protest by Queens residents on Friday, September 11, in front of Council Member Adams’ offices in Rochdale Village Mall, she panicked and called the NYPD.”
New York City Councilmember Adrienne Adams through a spokesperson has denied that she or her staff had anything to do with calling the police. In an email message the spokesperson said: “There is no truth to this statement and it is imperative that the information that you publish is accurate. The Council District 28 office staff, including Council Member Adams, continues to work remotely and the office is not open to the public. Council Member Adams was neither on the premises nor did she call the police with regard to any alleged protest.”
Black Star News apologizes for any harm caused to Councilmember Adams’ reputation and standing as a result of that one sentence. It appears that some individual or individuals not affiliated with the Councilmember’s office may have made the call to the police. Black Star News has reached out to the New York Police Department (NYPD) to determine who called the police in response to the protest. A spokesperson informed us that we will get a response later on Tuesday, whereupon an update will be published.
To be clear the protest did occur by activists who oppose any rollback or softening of the anti-chokehold law, which is indeed in the works.
