WASHINGTON, D.C. — Days after the Republican party lost midterm elections across the country in historic margins, Donald Trump named Stephen Miller as his new White House Chief of Staff.

Robert Weissman, co-president of Public Citizen, said:

“There could not be a clearer sign Trump aims to intensify his authoritarianism than the naming of Stephen Miller as his chief of staff. Notwithstanding- or maybe because of – the election results this week, Trump has decided to double down on racism, xenophobia, and cruelty rather than focus on the issues Americans are most concerned about. Stephen Miller is a white nationalist bigot who is behind some of the meanest and most authoritarian actions of Trump’s time in power — from the family separation policy to the deadly unleashing of paramilitary forces on communities across the country. Bestowing even more power upon one of this political chapter’s most cruel and racist ghouls is a mistake every Republican should condemn.”

Lisa Gilbert, co-president of Public Citizen, added:

“Since before Trump took office, warned that Stephen Miller’s ‘Project 2025’ was a policy disaster that would hurt Americans across the country. Two years later, American voters have made it resoundingly clear that they agree. The people are calling on their elected leaders to address critical issues like ending the illegal war in Iran and bringing down costs, but Trump’s horrifying appointment of Stephen Miller to an even more consequential role in his administration makes it clear he’s committed to doubling down on hatred until the bitter end.”

A recent investigation by Public Citizen into financial disclosures filed by Stephen Miller contains numerous inconsistencies between reported stock sales, share counts and disclosed family assets. The discrepancies raise questions about the accuracy of the filings and the White House ethics office’s certification of Miller’s disclosures.
