Faith and moral leader Bishop William J. Barber II will speak Monday at the funeral for Andrew Brown Jr., who was killed April 21 by a North Carolina deputy.
The funeral, which is invitation only, will be held at noon Monday at Fountain of Life Church, 1107 US-17 in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Rev. Al Sharpton will deliver the eulogy, and Bishop Barber will provide words of comfort to the family and community.
Andrew Brown Jr., 42, was the father of seven children, including five minor children.
“A warrant is not a license to kill even if a suspect supposedly drives away,” Bishop Barber said at a recent news conference. “A warrant does not mean a person is guilty. A warrant is not permission to shoot someone, possibly with assault rifles, multiple times. It is not the authorization to shoot someone in the back. And let’s be clear: It doesn’t matter if the officers are white or Black or brown or men or women. If they engage in brutality, use excessive force or abuse their power to murder citizens, officers of the law must be held accountable if the law is to mean anything for the rest of us.”
Bishop Barber is president and senior lecturer of Repairers of the Breach and co-chair of the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Revival. He also delivered the eulogy for Donovon Lynch, 25, who was shot and killed by police in Virginia Beach, Virginia, in March.
Horton’s Funeral Home and Cremations in Hertford, North Carolina, is handling arrangements. Viewings will be held Sunday at the funeral home and later at the Museum of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City.
