The late Robert Sobukwe President of the Pan Africanist Congress doesn’t get the credit he deserves for his role and the PAC’s in the South African liberation struggle.
Sobukwe joined the ANC youth wing in 1948 but split in 1958 to lead the PAC. He wanted an organization led exclusively by Africans to fight the racist White minority government apartheid regime.
After he helped organize the anti-pass laws protest, the regime responded violently with the Sharpville Massacre killing at least 69 people, including children.
Sobukwe was arrested, jailed, banned and spent the rest of his life under house arrest.
He died in 1978, aged only 54, and just 12 years before the collapse of the apartheid regime.
