The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention reports that cases of malaria are rising in Southern Africa.

Zimbabwe, Namibia, Eswatini and Botswana reportedly have rising cases of malaria. Zimbabwe, for example, has had 310 deaths this year compared to 49 deaths, for the same time period in 2024.
Epidemiologist Dr. Memory Mapfumo, from the Africa CDC, says “This surge is no coincidence. Prolonged rains have fuelled mosquito breeding, while activities like gold panning, fishing and artisanal mining are exposing more individuals to risk, especially during peak mosquito activity hours.”
Stephen Morrison, Director of the Global Health Policy Center at the Center for Strategic and International Studies pointed to several factors for the malaria uptick.
“We’re in a period of accelerating climate change, accelerating extreme heat, accelerating extreme weather events, which do favor malaria, as they provide a more hospitable environment for spread,” says Morrison.
Some experts think the US aid cuts, instituted by the Trump Administration, may lead to thousands of malaria-related deaths in Africa this year.
