Africa has an opportunity to become a major player in today’s artificial intelligence revolution, argues Babacar Seck, the founder of Askya Investment Partners, in a Semafor column.
The continent can either become a producer of AI technology, capturing the tremendous value it creates, or remain a mere consumer, watching its productivity gap with developed economies widen even further, he writes.
But with a sense of urgency and focus, African economies are in fact well positioned to take full advantage of this moment, says Seck. Africa’s relatively low labor costs make it possible to develop more cost efficient AI ecosystems, he argues, and innovators can pioneer lower-budget AI innovation to fit African economies. As was seen with the leapfrog advances with mobile technology on the continent, fully engaging AI could be truly transformative.
