On Tuesday night, Jimmy Kimmel triumphantly returned to late night television after being “indefinitely suspended,” by the ABC network. An emotional Kimmel basked in the approval of sustained applause by the audience as he was announced Tuesday.
But what deserves the most praise is: the people power that economically punished Disney, ABC’s parent company, and caused ABC to reverse its cowardly decision to appease Donald Trump.
But while ABC initially buckled to the pressure attempt to cancel Kimmel, because of the intimidation tactics of Trump’s FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, it was the cancelling of Disney subscriptions that forced ABC to erase their deplorable decision. The American people withdrew their dollars from Disney, for Kimmel’s suspension, to the tune of around $3 billion, or $5 billion of their stock market value.
The people’s money talked—and this forced ABC not to let Jimmy Kimmel walk. This outcome again teaches us that people power, and economic boycotts, work.
Of course, the belligerent bully, who is now ruining the country, as the first convict president, was not happy. On Tuesday, after whining at the United Nations General Assembly about a UN renovation contract that he did not get, Trump complained about ABC’s Kimmel reversal.
Trump posted: “I can’t believe ABC Fake News gave Jimmy Kimmel his job back. The White House was told by ABC that his Show was cancelled! Something happened between then and now because his audience is GONE, and his “talent” was never there. Why would they want someone back who does so poorly, who’s not funny, and who puts the Network in jeopardy by playing 99% positive Democrat GARBAGE. He is yet another arm of the DNC and, to the best of my knowledge, that would be a major Illegal Campaign Contribution. I think we’re going to test ABC out on this. Let’s see how we do. Last time I went after them, they gave me $16 Million Dollars. This one sounds even more lucrative. A true bunch of losers! Let Jimmy Kimmel rot in his bad Ratings.”
Here we see a tyrannical Trump tantrum threatening ABC with litigation. And because ABC wimped out, two previous times, this bully feels embolden to punch ABC again. Trump loves to engage in litigation—but he often loses. ABC, and the other corporate entities who routinely quickly cave to Trump, should keep this in mind.
America now stands at a dangerous crossroad as Trump, and his Republican rightwing flunkies, are busy crapping all over the Constitution. Ominously, Trump has been encouraged to continue his march toward authoritarianism because of the fecklessness of Congressional politicians, both Republicans and Democrats, as well as by the unprincipled blind greed of wealth corporations. We’ve seen large universities, law firms, and behemoth corporate media companies prioritize profit, and merger deals, over the protection of the rights of the American people.
Why didn’t a company like ABC, which runs one of the nation’s largest journalistic enterprises, not initially stand up for the Free Speech rights of Jimmy Kimmel?
When the largest journalism press companies fail to fight for the First Amendment, and Free Speech, what does that say about their commitment to so-called essential beliefs of American ideals? When these media companies fire journalists and columnists, who are just speaking uncomfortable truths, like they did to Karen Attiah, why should Americans continue to support their weak brand of “journalism?”
Unfortunately, most of America’s large corporate media companies are failing to show up at a time of great peril in America. Where are they as Trump invades Blue states and cities; flagrantly violates the law, while opposing judicial orders; and criminally calls for the political prosecution of opponents, based on lies and fake news?
However, the saving grace is that the American people are now waking up, and rising up, to the tyrannical threat posed by Trump. Their economic boycott of Disney returned Jimmy Kimmel to the television airwaves.
And the way things look now only the American people have the necessary willpower to stop Donald Trump and save America.
