Young romance feels old on screen now. There needs to be more films on discover-love-in-the-40s-and-50s. Aap Jaisa Koi should be given credit on Netflix for treading that path. Except for that, the film is comprised of other bits that do not fare well.

An Awkward Professor and an Unexpected Rishta
Shrirenu (R Madhavan), an awkward middle-aged man still a virgin, is a Sanskrit professor. He enters a sex-chatting app at his friend’s insistence (Namit Das). Soon, a rishta too good to be true approaches him from Madhu (Fatima Sana Shaikh), a French professor. They bond and fall in love and are almost engaged when something changes his perception of her. The final act ensues from here.
A Promising Start That Falters
The film begins on a breezy, beautiful note. Madhavan easily slips into the role of an awkward, rather sweet professor, and the first meet-cute between him and Madhu is an emotional scene. But this soon devolves into a mess because the makers, director Vivek Soni and writers Radhika Anand and Jehan Handa, seem to drift in and out of focus. What starts as a sweet film suddenly becomes preachy and screechy.
Weak Conflict and Flawed Execution
And the conflict? The sex chatting app. It’s so amateurish, it doesn’t even convince for a second. Sure, the makers probably intended it this way: Madhavan’s character is a manchild, uncomfortable with his to-be wife’s sexual freedom. But the film relies on convenient setups and feels rushed.
Madhavan’s character is flawed as it is shaped by patriarchal conditioning that he has carried in his upbringing. The commentary on men assuming it’s their birthright to ‘allow’ their partners to do anything is spot on, exactly the way another recent film, Mrs, starring Sanya Malhotra, handled it.
Performances That Almost Save It
Yet onscreen, it seems incomplete. Sub-tracks, like a character suddenly finding love elsewhere, feel surprising in a bad way and end up as weak links.
Madhavan does a decent job but is severely limited by the script. Some scenes seem fine when his actions indicate that they should be; the camera does not recall a brilliant film. Like the one where he talks about how having someone special feels so nice. Fatima, too, holds her own. Her look seems inspired by Rani from Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, with the flowing hair and sleeveless blouse sarees (Dharma Productions is involved with both the films). Fatima and Madhavan share good chemistry when things are sweet, but in confrontations and the climax, the writing is too weak to leave an impact.
Final Verdict: An Earnest but Flawed Attempt
Rohit Kohli and Justin Prabhakar’s music, at times, deftly matches the movie’s mood, only to go awry at some places.
In the end, Aap Jaisa Koi is a film with an earnest heart but muddled execution. It tries to say something bold about love, freedom and middle-aged romance… and then gets lost in its contradictions. You’ll find a few warm moments here, but they are buried under clumsy storytelling. Watch it only for the rare charm of seeing two grown-ups finding love, even if the film itself doesn’t quite know how to handle it.

After the two met, Dharmatic Entertainment went on to develop the film as a Netflix original. Radhika Anand conceived the story and wrote the screenplay, to which Jehan Handa later joined in. Then, in his directorial debut, Vivek Soni, who was associated with another Netflix original, Meenakshi Sundareshwar, helmed the film. The film was produced by Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta, and Somen Mishra under the Dharma banner. The backdrop for Aap Jaisa Koi is set across Jamshedpur and Kolkata. Principal photography took place in both cities.
