After a 10-year-long wait, fans of the famous videogame Minecraft are now in for a surprise. The new “A Minecraft Movie”, the first live-action adaption of the long-cherished videogame, is finally about to hit the big screen. With the first trailer being released on September 04, 2024, fans are abuzz with several theories on the plotline, the release date, and the list of actors. Who’s in the cast?
The cast of A Minecraft Movie has several prominent actors playing the roles of “misfits” in the movie. The first actor is Jason Momoa, renowned for his role in the film, Aquaman. Momoa plays the character of Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison. Dressed in a pink jacket and long hair, he embodies an eccentric figure. With his quirky attires and dialogues, he brings a freshness to this character as opposed to his usual rugged and heroic characters played in DC movies.
Along with him are actors Emma Myers as Natalie, Danielle Brooks as Dawn, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen as Henry. Together these four comprise the “misfits” who venture into the new world of Minecraft.
Another central character of the movie is Steve, played by the well-known actor Jack Black. He guides these four through the rocky world of Minecraft. He seems to be an acquainted player in this world and through the trailer, it is evident that he cautions the rest of the team to gear up for an adventurous world ahead.
Jennifer Coolidge, Kate McKinnon, and Jemaine Clement are also star actors who have been mentioned in the cast. However, their characters remain unrevealed till now. These characters would certainly bring more depth and humor to this movie. With the list of cast, it is evident that the movie is about to be packed with a whole lot of excitement and adventure.
Unfolding the plot
From the first trailer, there are bits and pieces that fans have been able to uncover about the plotline. The trailer focuses on a new portal, one that is very different from the usual portals found in the game. So far, the fans are aware of the Nether portal and the End portal. This portal is marked blue at the beginning of the trailer, and by the end, there is another portal in purple. This mysterious portal opens to a new world. It has lakes, mountains, waterfalls, and vast, unexplored land waiting for the misfits.
The trailer’s first few seconds show the misfits. They are confused and look around at an enigmatic world. “Magical Mystery Tour” by The Beatles plays against this colorful background. Also, there are pink sheep in cube-like figures added to the countryside. Henry holds a glowing blue block, assumed to be an orc. It is probably how they reached the Overworld.
Each character has their quirkiness and power. Lost in this “Overworld,” they must find a way back home. The Overworld includes a small town and a few villages under an arc. The area has towers, but mostly block and dirt buildings.
However, it is not an easy way out, as the Overworld is filled with creatures such as Piglins and Zombies. Here enters Steve, the rescuer. He guides them to use their creativity to make tools to save themselves. “Anything you can dream here, you can make.” This is the intro for the misfits to wield their weapons.
Throughout the trailer, a few wielded items can be seen. A diamond sword, iron ingots, iron buckets, and arrows, to name a few. All the animals and monsters in the Overworld are cubic. They match the game’s creative display in Minecraft. There are also Creepers in the film, as observed in the trailer. One of them appears behind Garrett in one of the first scenes.
Interestingly, only the misfits and Steve are seen as action-live figures. The movie plays out in the artistic cubic version of the video game with cubic figures. There also seem to be glimpses of the Netherworld, from where the Piglins arrive.
The Netherworld consists of a lot of Piglins and lava. They carry their weapons and are mostly seen as destructive. The game shows there are friendly Piglins. Players can barter tools with them if they wear golden armor. Also, there are Piglin brutes who are seen entering the town where Steve resides. To survive and return to their world, the misfits must unite. They must use their creative skills, with Steve’s help, to navigate this mysterious world.
Creative Team Behind the Film
A Minecraft Movie was filmed in New Zealand and production started in August 2023. The film is directed by Jared Hess, who is known for his flair in humorous and graceful storytelling. The screenplay is written by Chris Bowman, Rob McElhenney, and Hubbel Palmer. McElhenney is famous for his role in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and has great comedic timing. The film, with such noteworthy artists, has more depth and humor than it seems.
