FAISON FIREHOUSE THEATER CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH: FESTIVITIES AND SCREENING OF ‘CIVIL WAR: THE UNTOLD STORY’

Tony Award Winner George Faison to Host and NY1’s Cheryl Wills to Emcee Live Event Open to the Public on February 4th to Commemorate Black History Month.

WHAT: A special two-hour evening of entertainment to kick-off Black History Month, celebrate the Emancipation Proclamation and contemplate the outcome if Lincoln had been defeated in his re-election bid. Entitled “HeartBeat,” the live event includes stirring music and original dance pieces from and inspired by the period, and readings from historic excerpts by abolitionists Frederick Douglas, Sojourner Truth, and Harriet Beecher Stowe. Live performances will be followed by a sneak-peek screening of Civil War: The Untold Story – “With Malice Toward None,” the final hour in a visually stunning new 5-part TV documentary series that shows how political, social and military forces of the war collided in Atlanta during the summer of 1864 – a time when Lincoln’s re-election and the Emancipation Proclamation were both hanging in the balance.

Civil War: The Untold Story is a new series narrated by Elizabeth McGovern (Downton Abbey) and produced for public television. Premiering nationally in spring 2014, the series breaks new ground by examining the war through the lens of the Western Theater – including critically important yet lesser-known battles of Shiloh, Vicksburg, Chickamauga, and Atlanta.

Filmed on the very grounds where these epic battles were fought, it recreates authentic scenes and features interviews with top historians to provide new insights on the war and the relatively unknown roles that African Americans played in the conflict, from enslaved to emancipated to soldier.

Civil War: The Untold Story will premiere in the New York metro area on public television station THIRTEEN in Spring 2014.
