Washington, D.C. — The role of independent agencies in our government is as important as it is underappreciated. These agencies do everything from protecting Americans from dangerous products to combating consumer fraud to safeguarding Americans’ money when banks fail. Their work literally saves lives.

Unfortunately, these agencies are now under attack due to the very independence that makes them so effective. A new analysis from the Center for American Progress describes the work of nine major independent agencies, emphasizing just how much everyday Americans could be harmed if these agencies lose their independence.

“Independent agencies rarely get the recognition they deserve, but the importance of their work for everyday Americans cannot be overstated,” said Michael Sozan, senior fellow at CAP and co-author of the analysis. “Thanks to these agencies, Americans do not have to worry, for example, about losing all their money if a bank fails or giving their children hazardous toys. President Donald Trump’s dangerous attempt to control and politicize independent agencies will ultimately benefit him and his allies—and harm the American people.”

The Trump administration has weakened many of these agencies by illegally firing their leaders, cutting critical personnel, and putting their work under political pressure that could lead to corruption. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, for example, protects consumers from junk fees charged by banks and credit card companies. But the Trump administration has targeted the agency for near elimination and dropped many investigations of big banks and financial firms.
