In a powerful statement connecting past civil rights achievements to present-day community leadership, District 28 City Council candidate Latoya LeGrand has announced a special campaign event honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy while advancing her vision for the district’s future.
“Dr. King’s dream wasn’t just about changing laws – it was about transforming communities,” LeGrand stated in an exclusive interview. “Here in District 28, we have the opportunity and responsibility to continue that transformation through engaged local leadership and community action.”
LeGrand emphasized how Dr. King’s principles of economic justice, equal opportunity, and community empowerment directly inform her campaign’s priorities for District 28. “When we talk about affordable housing, quality education, and economic development in our district, we’re building on the foundation Dr. King laid for us,” she explained.
To celebrate Dr. King’s legacy while supporting these campaign initiatives, LeGrand’s campaign is hosting a Sneaker Ball Fundraiser during MLK Weekend:

The event promises to blend celebration with purpose, offering community members an opportunity to connect with the campaign while honoring Dr. King’s enduring impact. “This event represents exactly what Dr. King advocated for – bringing people together to create positive change in their community,” LeGrand noted.
Local community leaders have praised LeGrand’s approach to connecting historical civil rights achievements with present-day community needs. “Ms. LeGrand understands that Dr. King’s work isn’t finished – it’s ongoing, and it happens at the local level,” said Rev. James Thompson, a longtime District 28 resident and civil rights advocate.
The campaign encourages all district residents to participate in this celebration of Dr. King’s legacy while supporting initiatives aimed at strengthening the community. Attendees can expect an evening of networking, community building, and discussion about the future of District 28.
