In the final moments of the match that took place on Thanksgiving between the Chicago Bears and the Detroit Lions, the Bears were a few yards outside of the field goal range on the third down. The team was not able to use a timeout in order to gain more yards for their kicker to try and tie the game. The quarterback Caleb Williams took around 30 seconds to get a play off which was the last play. Matt Eberfus had around 36 seconds to call a timeout but he decided not to do so and allowed his QB to attempt catching the ball. The clock would have run out in case the catch had been made, which left the fans confused about his plan.

After the game became a lost battle, Matt Eberfus in an interview tried defending his decisions by saying that he liked what they did on the field. He mentioned that their game plan was that, since it was the third down going into fourth, they expected to re-rack the play at 18 seconds, throw it in bounds and then finally get into the field goal range before calling out the last timeout but things really didn’t work out the way he wanted them to. On being asked about his possible termination from his job as the coach, he said that he would keep on grinding and working.

Matt Eberfus has been on the receiving end of major heat after the game and the replacement of Eberfus as the coach is being openly demanded.
