Major union backs Democratic Primary winner Kenneth P. Thompson

District Council 37, the city’s largest public employee union with 121,000 members and 50,000 retirees, voted unanimously to endorse Kenneth P. Thompson, Esq. the Democratic nominee for District Attorney for Kings County (Brooklyn), New York.
DC 37 Executive Director Lillian Roberts announced the union’s endorsement saying: “In the September 10th primary Kenneth Thompson, Esq., a former federal prosecutor who has successfully prosecuted numerous high-profile cases, won a decisive victory when he challenged one of the longest serving district attorneys in the city’s history — incumbent Charles J. Hynes. That victory of 100,000 to 81,000 was in and of itself a profound demand for change by the residents of one of New York’s most populous boroughs– a borough where many members of District Council 37 live and work. In fact, a number of District Council 37 members work in the Brooklyn D.A.’s office, including members of New York Social Service Employees Union Local 371 the Court, County and Department of Probation Employees Local 1070, Health Service Employees Local 768, NYC Accountants, Statisticians & Actuaries Local 1407 and NYC Electronic Data Processing Personnel Local 2627.”
“With our endorsement comes a pledge to work diligently on his behalf with our powerful, sophisticated field operations to get out the vote. This union has a proven record of successfully supporting our endorsed candidates,” Roberts added.
In accepting the endorsement, Kenneth P. Thompson recalled his role as a prosecutor involved in several high-profile cases, including the Abner Louima case, saying throughout his career his guiding principles have been a profound belief in “one standard of justice for all.”
He also indicated that he plans to devote considerable attention and resources during his tenure as Brooklyn District Attorney to protecting workers from unscrupulous employers.
