Sarah McBride now becomes the first in America’s history as an openly transgender person elected to the United States Congress. She happens to be a state senator from the state of Delaware, which has seen her win an at-large seat in the state after knocking out a Republican candidate, former state police officer John Whalen III. Her win counts as an effective symbol in terms of queer representation, besides representing an inevitable shift in the political wind in America.

Sweeping Victory

McBride won her election with comfortable margins, taking almost 57.6% of the total vote against Whalen. This is a record victory mainly because, since 2010, the congressional seat of Delaware has been held by Democrats. In her winning speech, McBride took ample time to thank such supporters and reiterated that no Democrat should be left behind, saying that in a democracy all Democrats must be protected their reproductive rights; they should have their health in proper places; and make democracy one that is inclusive, Pioneer in Politics.

Several historic firsts have filled Sarah McBride’s path to politics. She was elected in 2020 to be the first openly transgender person to serve in a state senate. She also became the first openly transgender individual to intern at the White House under Barack Obama and made news for being the first transgender person to speak at a major political party convention in 2016.

Her political career remains characterized by advocacy for LGBT rights and social justice causes. McBride has authored anti-discrimination legislation that safeguards against discrimination of transgender people in Delaware and has served as a national press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign.

Keen on Key Issues

Through the campaign, McBride ensured that even though her election was historic, she stayed focused on the critical issues affecting her constituents. The priorities include affordable childcare, paid family leave, access to housing, and reproductive freedom. McBride looks forward to helping people find empathy and understanding for transgender people at a time when discrimination and violence against the LGBTQ+ community are growing.

In the wake of increased bills against trans persons proposed by different states in the US, McBride’s victory is a light for the future. She also wants her presence in the house to be an example of encouraging more people to increase acceptance and support for LGBT rights.

Key Supports:

Throughout the campaign, several high-profile personalities and groups had supported McBride. For example, Joe Biden, who had known her for many years, was sending a congratulatory message to her in connection with the win she posted at the primary election. Another group and organization that were pro-gun safety and pro-reproductive rights also threw their weight behind her.

Commenting on her historic win, McBride said, reflecting the young transgender men and women, “To those who fear that they might not be embraced by the heart of this nation, it’s important to know that they belong. Her election symbolizes forward-thinking steps toward inclusivity in American politics.
