Daystar Peterson, also known as Tory Lanez, was raised in Toronto, Canada, a town with a thriving Caribbean community, which was reflected in his parents’ home. His mother, who passed away, was from Curacao, and his dad was from Barbados. Tory’s artistic abilities were evident from a young age. He published his debut mixtape, TL 2 TO, in 2009 while residing in Florida. To go along with the record, he created several independent videos. Hesitantly and with pride, he continues, “I currently direct all of my music videos myself.” He had put out less than a dozen mixtapes by 2014, but his first smash single, “Say It,” amidst a developing dispute with another Toronto native Drake.
Tory moved from being an underground star to the top of the charts as the record peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. He passed down the valuable “Freshman of the Year” title from XXL in 2016 and stated he was planning on going on tour with A$AP Ferg.

He began singing at the age of seventeen and rapping as a youngster. After releasing his debut mixtape in 2009, he began creating videos and posting them to YouTube. Having joined Mad Love Recordings/Interscope Records, he recorded the single “Say It” in 2015, which featured the well-known Brownstone classic “If You Love Me” and peaked at number 10 on the US R&B chart.
