Young adults and kids both love comics, right? Whenever the mention of comics comes to mind, the mind immediately goes to the popular comics of Marvel and DC. However, another category of comics other than these two is The Hellboy Comics. The comics feature a superhero named Hellboy. Mike Mignola created the superhero comic character. The Dark Horse Comics publishes the Hellboy comics. The Hellboy character first appeared at San Diego Comic-Con in August 1993.  Hellboy comic character has been seen in many projects since. Four live-action Hellboy Movies have also been made.

The first two movies were released in 2004 and 2008 respectively. A third sequel was in development but was cancelled due to insufficient funds. Then 2019, a reboot part was released, which met with negative reviews. The fourth unreleased part will be released in October 2024, titled Hellboy: The Crooked Man. Before the new part release, let’s look at the box-office collection of the previous three Hellboy Movies.

Hellboy Movies: The First Part- Hellboy(2004)

Hellboy(2004) is an American superhero film. The film is based on the Dark Horse Comics of Hellboy. It is the first live-action film in the Hellboy series. The director and writer of this film is Guillermo del Toro, and the producers are Revolution Studios, Lawrence Gordon and Lloyd Levin. Ron Perlman stars in the titular role of Hellboy. Other leading actors in the film are Selma Blair and Rupert Evans.

The film is based on the first Hellboy comic- Hellboy: Seed Of Destruction. The plot of the first part revolves around a demon Hellboy, who has turned into an investigator for the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense. Hellboy has turned into an investigator to deal with the paranormal threats. 

Box-Office Collection

The first of the Hellboy Movies, Hellboy 2004, had its premiere in Los Angeles in March 2004. In the United States, it was released on April 2 2004 by Sony. Hellboy received positive reviews from the critics. Its box-office collection crossed $99.8 million worldwide. The film’s production budget was $60-66 million; thus, this film was a profitable hit at the box-office collections.

The Second Part Of Hellboy Movies: The Golden Army(2008)

 Hellboy 2: The Golden Army( 2008), based on the character of the same name of the Dark Horse Comics, came in 2008. The director and writer of the first film, Guillermo del Toro, returned to direct the second part, too. Hellboy 2: The Golden Army was written by Mike Mignola and director Toro. Ron Perlman plays the titular character Hellboy along with Selma Blair, Doug Jones and John Hurt in significant roles. 

The plot revolves around Hellboy- a demon-turned-investigator for the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense. In the second part, Hellboy and the Bureau have to fight a battle with a prince who plans to take over their world under his magical kingdom.

Box-Office Collection 

Hellboy 2: The Golden Army was released in the United States in July 2008. The second part received positive reviews from critics. The solid performances of its lead character, Ron Perlman, as Hellboy, received much love from the audience and the critics. This film’s imaginative depiction of the fantasy world and other cast members’ performances was highly appreciated.

The film made $168- 169 million with a $82.5- 85 million production budget. It also received an Academy Award nomination under the Best Makeup category at the 81st Awards. 

Cancelled Third Part of the Hellboy Movies

A sequel was in development after the Hellboy 2: The Golden Army(2008) part. The director from the first two films- Guillermo del Toro, was to be returned with the old cast members, like Ron Perlman amd Selma Blair. However, in 2017, the producers announced that the third-part sequel was cancelled due to low funds. However, a reboot series based on the Hellboy Movies will be released. 

The first Reboot part- Hellboy(2019)

In May 2017, Mike Mignola announced Millennium Media’s ( a production company) plans for a reboot series of Hellboy Movies. The film was to be titled Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen previously. The Stranger Things actor- David Harbour depicted the role of Hellboy. Neil Marshall directed the film. The film’s plot is based on comic books like- Darkness Calls, The Wild Hunt, The Storm and the Fury, and Hellboy in Mexico.

Box-Office Collection

The film, later titled Hellboy, was released on April 12, 2019. It was a disaster on the box-office collections. The excessive violence scenes and uneven tone throughout the film plots were a disaster to watch, too. The film received negative reviews due to the stated factors. It made $55.1 million, with the production budget at $50 million

Hellboy: The Crooked Man 2024 

The fourth live-action film in the Hellboy Movies series is the currently released Hellboy: The Crooked Man 2024 movie. The film is based on the same comic character as its predecessors. It is the second reboot of the Hellboy film series after the 2019 film. Brian Taylor directed this film, drawing inspiration from the Crooked Man series by Mignola. Director Taylor, along with Mignola and Christopher Golden, wrote the script.

Jack Kesy stars in the titular character Hellboy with other actors like Jefferson White and Adeline Rudolph. The film was released in Belgium on June 20, 2024. It was released on Video on Demand in the United States on October 8, 2024. Till now, the film has made $1.3 million worldwide. This film, like its first reboot part, received negative reviews.
