Biden To Pass Torch To Harris As Democratic National Convention Gets Underway

President Joe Biden will headline the opening nightof the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, less than a month after he dropped out of the race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to take his place at the top of the party’s ticket.  

Also expected to speak tonightare First Lady Jill Biden, Hillary Clinton, the former secretary of state and 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, as well as New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, who had been on Harris’ shortlist for running mates.

The man she did end up picking, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, is slated to speak on Wednesday, and Harris will formally accept the party’s nomination for president on Thursday.

The Democrats’ spirit of unity in Chicago could be put to the test over the next four days as thousands of protesters plan to demonstrate against the war in Gaza.

Former President Donald Trump and his running mate Sen. JD Vance are countering the DNC with a swing through battleground states this week.
