A community meet and greet for U.S. Senate candidate Lawrence Hamm will be held today, Friday, January 26, 2024, 6:00pm at Local 1233 Union Hall, 19 Fenwick Street in Newark, New Jersey.
Another event for Hamm will be held tomorrow, Saturday, January 27, 2024, 2:00pm at First Bethel Baptist Church, 860 18th Avenue in Irvington, New Jersey.
One of the issues Hamm will address at these events will be Israel’s war against Palestinians.
“I was uplifted by the landmark decision of the International Court Of Justice to reject Israel’s application to throw out the case brought by South Africa accusing it of committing genocide against the Palestinians,” Lawrence Hamm, Chairman, People’s Organization For Progress, and U.S. Senate candidate stated. “The court said that South Africa’s case accusing Israel of genocide can proceed, that Israel must take all steps necessary to prevent genocide and that it must permit the flow of humanitarian aid.”
“This decision was clearly a loss for Israel and its primary supporter the United States,” Hamm said. “However, I am deeply disappointed that the court did not call for an immediate ceasefire. More than 26,000 Palestinians have been slaughtered, 62,000 have been injured, thousands buried under rubble of bombed out buildings, more than one million displaced.”
“As we read about the court’s decision Israel continues its bombing and slaughter of Palestinians. How many more must die before the carnage is stopped. I call upon President Biden and Congress to demand an immediate and permanent ceasefire to Israel’s genocidal war against the Palestinians,” he added. “Furthermore, I call for a halt to all military aid to Israel until this war comes to an end.”
“Since October, again and again I have called for a ceasefire. I was the first candidate in this senate race to do so, and I will continue to do so until this war comes to an end,” Hamm said.
Hamm said he plans to attend demonstrations against the war that will take place today and Sunday at the congressional offices of Mikie Sherrill and Andy Kim who is also in the Senate race.
“The majority of Americans want a ceasefire. It is time for our representatives in Congress to do the same,” he said.
Hamm also said he plans to discuss a senatorial debate planned for February that is sponsored by the New Jersey Globe which he believes locks out himself and other candidates.
“The stipulation that only those candidates that have raised at least $750,000 can participate is anti-democratic. Under this arrangement only Tammy Murphy and Andy Kim can participate,” Hamm said. “This is a closed debate. It is another example of how the rich and powerful manipulate the political process to work to their advantage.”
“I call on New Jersey Globe to drop these onerous requirements. I demand an open debate in which all of the declared candidates in the Democratic senate primary are allowed to participate. Voters should have an opportunity to see and hear all the candidates debate the issues they are concerned about,” he said. “I also challenge both Murphy and Kim to stand up for democracy and demand an open debate in which all of the declared candidates for the Democratic senate primary can participate.”
“If New Jersey Globe refuses to open up the debate then I call upon other media outlets to step up and sponsor debates in which all the candidates can participate, Hamm stated.
