At 2:30AM on Tuesday, August 30th, Donovan Lewis was lying in bed when the Columbus Police Department stormed into his apartment to serve a warrant. Moments later, police fired a single gunshot into the 20-year-old’s bedroom. That shot resulted in his death. Body cam footage shows that Lewis posed no threat.

On Tuesday, August 30th, Donovan Lewis was lying in bed at 2:30am when a K9 unit of the Columbus Police commanded Lewis to surrender under the threat of mauling by their attack dog. Moments later, they broke into his room and, in less than a second, shot him in the stomach before he could even get up.

Bodycam footage makes it apparent that Lewis posed no threat to CPD, yet the killer cops demanded he crawl onto the floor after shooting him. When Lewis was unable to do so, CPD handcuffed him.

Soon afterward, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

This heinous act follows a string of shootings carried out by CPD. In fact, this is the third shooting involving CPD in the past two weeks and the sixth of 2022 alone.

The Lewis family and Columbus community demand:

1. Immediately fire and arrest Officer Ricky Anderson, who allegedly fired the fatal shot.

2. Divert his pension to the Lewis Family.

3. End the execution of late-night warrants. No warrants between 12:00am – 8:00am.

4. A meeting between the family and the Chief of Police Bryant, Mayor Ginther, and public safety Director Clark must take place—face-to-face.

5. There must be an independent investigation, in addition to that being performed by BCI, into the murder of Donovan Lewis.

6. End Qualified Immunity. Divert funding, and resources, to mental health services and grassroots organizations that empower and enable social services.

7. We demand that the use of a police K9 be strictly prohibited in cases where a warrant is being served for nondrug offenses.
