YONKERS, NY – Today, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced that he has endorsed Congressman Jamaal Bowman for re-election in New York’s 16th Congressional District. Attorney General Ellison’s endorsement is a clear sign of the momentum that continues to build behind Rep. Bowman’s re-election campaign, even in the midst of the controversy following the unveiling of new district maps.

“If there is anything that I’ve learned over the years in this field, it’s that nothing is more important than electing a representative who shows up for his district and who truly cares about people. Congressman Jamaal Bowman cares about people – regardless of zip code, background, economic background, race, or party affiliation. He cares about every single person out there and is fighting day-in and day-out in Congress to make sure that every single person has access to affordable healthcare, a quality education, affordable housing, a clean environment, and most importantly to put an end to gun violence and the school to prison pipeline. For these reasons and more, I am proud to endorse my brother, Congressman Jamaal Bowman for re-election,” said Attorney General Ellison.

Keith Ellison has severed as Minnesota’s 30th attorney general since 2019 and received national attention when prosecuting Derek Chauvin, the white former officer charged with killing George Floyd and who was eventually convicted of two counts of murder and manslaughter.

Attorney General Ellison has also brought in hundreds of millions of dollars to Minnesota through litigation including a $300 million settlement with opioid makers and distributors and over $1.8 million dollars for as many as 60,000 low-income Minnesotans who have been deceived by TurboTax. Recently, Attorney General Ellison has been vocal about the need for President Biden to cancel student debt and on price gouging during the baby formula shortage.

“I am incredibly humbled to receive the support of Attorney General and former Congressman Keith Ellison,” said Jamaal Bowman. “As a Black man, Mr. Ellison has been a role model of mine for many years. As the first Black Attorney General and the first Muslim elected to statewide office in Minnesota, AG Ellison has faced persecution, especially while fighting for the human rights of Muslims around the world. He has broken down barriers for so many all while being an integral leader in the fight to reform the criminal justice system and to break the cycle of police misconduct. I am proud to have Attorney General Ellison as an alley in my campaign.”

Attorney General Ellison first gained national recognition as the first Muslim elected to Congress in 2007. He served for over a decade and was chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Prior to running for Congress, he practiced civil rights law.

Attorney General Keith Ellison adds to the long list of endorsements Rep. Bowman has received for his re-election campaign including from powerhouses like the Working Families Party, Communications Workers of America, The Jewish Vote, the Sunrise Movement, Community Voices Heard, Make the Road, NARAL, Brady PAC, the Council of School Supervisors & Administrators (CSA), NYPAN, NYIC, CWA, 1199 SEIU, and Planned Parenthood Action Fund. As well as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, NY Senators Schumer and Gillibrand, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, Congressmen Mondaire Jones, and Sean Patrick Maloney.
