Gen. al-Sisi. He killed Egypt’s democracy-in-progress and more than 50 Egyptians in the process, so far
[Black Star News Editorial]
Don’t you like how corporate media is trying to pivot away from the massacre of 51 Egyptians by the military junta in that country and now parrot the story about elections within six months?
Elections for what purpose?
The illegal coup regime under figurehead leader Adly Mansour says it will hold parliamentary vote soon and presidential elections soon thereafter and restore constitutional democratic rule.
Why not just restore the elected president you already have?
How will you hold an election that won’t again be won by the Muslim Brotherhood’s supporters given that an estimated 13 million voters backed the party?
Will the military-installed regime draft a constitution that gives some Egyptians, presumably Muslim Brotherhood supporters, only half a vote while other Egyptians get one-person one-vote?
And should the Muslim Brotherhood run and again prevail will Egypt’s discredited army allow the party to take office? And what of the Egyptians massacred and the hundreds wounded? Who will pay for that crime?
Didn’t NATO intervene in Libya and take out Muammar al-Quathafi because he was accused of “killing his own people”? Who will punish the Egyptian military junta, headed by Defense Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi for “killing their own people”? Will there be any crimes against humanity charges? Or such charges don’t apply when the coup leaders are “our” coup leaders.
Al-Sisi is no Gamal Abdel Nasser, a hero who planned the ouster of King Farouk in 1952. Nasser had intelligence, charisma, political acumen, vision, and bravery: after dodging 8 bullets from an assassin he continued a political speech and urged the crowd to calm down.
What does al-Sisi have to show? A river of blood in Cairo.
And for those who still struggle with the definition of a coup? Consider the following analogy:
U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel shows up at The White House accompanied by Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair General Martin E. Dempsey and Hagel says, “Mr. President you have to come with us.”
And the president is taken to a military barracks. And the next day, Hagel goes on TV with religious leaders and candidates who lost the election last year. And soon after Justice John Roberts swears in either Mitt Romney or Newt Gingrich or Rick Santorum as “president.”
When an elected civilian president is led away by men in uniform and replaced, it’s a coup.
Good luck Egypt. Betrayed by a general who thinks too highly of himself.
