Seven detention officers in Texas were fired after a Black man, whose family says may have been experiencing a mental health crisis, died in custody.

The internal investigation found that the officers violated department policies and procedures leading to the death of 26-year-old Marvin Scott III, Collin County Sheriff Jim Skinner said in a news release Thursday.

“Everyone in Collin County deserves safe and fair treatment, including those in custody at our jail,” Skinner said in the statement. “I will not tolerate less.” An eighth officer who was also being investigated resigned, the release said. The department has not released the names of the officers.
