Lawyers made their opening arguments Monday morning in the trial of a White former police officer, Derek Chauvin, for the killing of a Black man, George Floyd, that was captured on video, sparked a summer of nationwide protests and forced a national reckoning on issues of race, policing and social justice.

After a lunch break following opening arguments, prosecutors called Jena Scurry to the stand to help establish how other trained first responders saw Chauvin’s actions against Floyd — kneeling on his neck for more than nine minutes — as alarming and unusual, seeking to undercut the defense’s opening remarks that characterized them as consistent with Chauvin’s police training.

Prosecutor Jerry W. Blackwell previewed Scurry as a witness during his opening statements, saying after watching Floyd’s arrest on a surveillance feed that “she did something that she had never done in her career. She called the police on the police.”
