New York Attorney General Letitia James Saturday released the following statement about her office’s ongoing investigation into the death of Daniel Prude:
“The Prude family and the Rochester community have been through great pain and anguish. My office will immediately move to empanel a grand jury as part of our exhaustive investigation into this matter.”
Protests have erupted in Rochester since footage was released showing the insensitive treatment of Prude by Rochester Police which led to his death in March.
Prude died from asphyxiation after he was suffocated by a “spit hood,” which is supposed to protect police from the saliva from a detainee. Prude, who was suffering from metal problems at the time, allegedly told officers he had COVID-19.
By early Sunday, around nine people were arrested from the ongoing protests and three police officers were reportedly injured.
