Madam C.J. Walker once said, “I had to make my own living and my own opportunity. But I made it! Don’t sit down and wait for the opportunities to come. Get up and make them.”

This quote rings true today in so many ways.

Did you know that this month is National Black Business Month?

It is a time to recognize Black-owned businesses across the country and to highlight their important role in the community, as well as to the national economy.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Black business owners account for about 10 percent of U.S. businesses and about 30 percent of all minority-owned businesses, totaling approximately two million companies owned by African-Americans.

Our call to action is to continue to support and encourage African-American-owned businesses in our communities. By simply patronizing these businesses, we can help them to grow, thrive and survive.

It’s up to all of us to make opportunities happen.
