I see the possibility of a Garcia fight with matthysse filling the almost 20, 000 capacity seating of Barclays.
Lucas Matthysse, the modern day “Wild Bull of The Pampas” established himself last night as not only the present day “Manos De Piedras,” Hands of Stone, but also as the heir apparent to control the entire 140 pound or Junior Welterweight Crown for years to come if given his well- deserved opportunities.
On Saturday, May 18, 2013 at Atlantic City, New Jersey’s Boardwalk Hall, Matthysse, “La Maquina”, the Machine, destroyed Lamont Peterson’s chances at 140 pound dominance by knocking him out — and out of contention at 2 minutes and 14 seconds of the third.
It was a 3-knockdown high voltage barrage of deadly punches.
In the first round, Lamont Peterson, 31-2-1, 16 k.o.’s, and I.B.F. Junior Welterweight Champ seemed to be in control jabbing and moving rapidly avoiding Lucas Matthysse ( 34-2, 32 knockouts, and Interim W.B.C. Super Lightweight Champion).
But it was short-lived because in the 2nd round Matthysse hit Peterson with a hard left hook high on his right forehead and knocked him down. Peterson actually never recovered from that head punch, perhaps saved by the bell. When he stumbled out for the 3rd round he had no defense against Matthysse’s deadly but accurate punches which ended the fight.
Richard Schaefer, C.E.O. of Golden Boy Promotions said with resolute conviction: “This is the new Manny Pacquiao; but his name is Lucas Matthysse and he hails from Argentina.” Schaefer was correct. I feel that Matthysse hits harder than Pacquiao, and as one fan in attendance yelled out: “That Lucas could flat-out hit; no one is going to beat him at 140 pounds.”
Matthysse said this fight was vindication because of the two previous questionable decision losses to Zab Judah and Devon Alexander who defended his I.B.F. Welterweight Crown also at the Boardwalk Hall in the semi-final bout. “This time I brought my own referee in to the ring, my left and right hands and didn’t have to worry about another decision loss,” he said.
Matthysse has been promised a championship fight with the undefeated, hard-punching, W.B.A. /W.B.C and Ring Magazine 140-pound Champion Danny “Swift” Garcia, who is 26-0-0, 16 knockouts, sometime in September of this year.
“This is the one fight that I want above all others which will prove that I am the best in the world at 140 pounds so Garcia cannot avoid me,” declared Matthysse who has knocked out his last 6 opponents in a row counting Peterson. He further said he did not want to fight any of the other 140 pound contenders. “Not because I am afraid of them but because I don’t want to be victimized again by another bad decision, it is my time now to fight for a world title,” he said.
Indeed Matthysse is ready and deserving of this title fight opportunity although he could fight Marcos Maidana, Timothy Bradley, or even Juan Manuel Marquez to keep busy while he is waiting for Garcia to make up his mind in choosing his next title defense opponent.
The Danny Garcia vs. Lucas Matthysse championship fight will be a great fight. The young undefeated champ and the proven hard punching veteran who will take no prisoners.
I feel that at this very early time of predictions that Matthysse will be too much for Garcia. I have seen too many flaws in Garcia’s arsenal defensively and offensively and Matthysse who has knocked out 32 of his 34 opponents, and has too much ring savvy, will be the victor; maybe by an early round knockout.
Speaking of future and perhaps exciting fights the boxing promoters have gifted us with some interesting fights such as: Manny Pacquiao vs. Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios, Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Timothy Bradley, Paulie Malignaggi vs. Adrien Broner, Marcus Maidana vs. Josesito Lopez, Bernard Hopkins vs. Karo Murat, Mike Garcia vs. Juan Manuel “JuanMa” Lopez, Gennady “ 3 GGG” Golovkin vs. Matthew “Mack The Knife” Macklin , Carl Froch vs. Mikkel Kessler.
The “Young Senior Citizen of Boxing” Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins continues to expand on his Hall of Fame legacy by defending his I.B.F. Light Heavyweight Crown, July 13, 2013 at the Barclays Center, against German #1 contender, Karo Murat, 29 years old with a record of 25-1-1, 15 knockouts.
There is also a mega fight pending between Saul “EL Canelo” Alvarez vs. Floyd “Money” Mayweather; but now the Mayweather Camp insist on a catch-weight fight at 147 pounds. Ridiculous, simply because Alvarez will not go down to 147 pounds since he is a Junior Middleweight, and his “walk-around” weight between fights is 165 pounds. This ploy by the Mayweather camp seems to be a deja-vu by them when Mayweather refused to fight Pacquiao unless he took the U.S.A.D.A. Steroid test. I am very sure Alvarez will not go down in weight.
Last but not least Miguel Cotto will fight in September but an opponent has not been named; and he wants to fight in Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, forsaking his boxing home, Madison Square Garden.
The Barclays Center is probably becoming the boxing center of New York. We have Paulie Malignaggi vs. Adrien Broner, June 22, 2013, the Hopkins fight July 13, 2013, Cotto, already securing a September date at the Barclays, and Danny Garcia stating that he would like to make the Barclays his boxing home.
I see the possibility of a Garcia fight with matthysse filling the almost 20, 000 capacity seating of Barclays.
