Prof. Daniels
Dr. Ron Daniels, Distinguished Lecturer at York College, City University of New York, has announced his retirement from the position after a decade of service. He will deliver a Final Campus and Community Lecture May 17th at the York College Performing Arts Center.
Timed to coincide with the 64th Anniversary of the historic Brown vs Board of Education Supreme Court Decision, the title of the Lecture will be: “Toward a More Perfect Union: Finishing the Unfinished Black Freedom Struggle.”
Campus/Community Lectures, placing students with elected officials, government and community agencies through the Political Science Internship Program and engaging students in national and international conferences and events were among the highlights of Dr. Daniels’ tenure at York College.
In 2015 he led a Pilgrimage of 40 students, faculty and staff to participate in the 50th Anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery March– the original March prompted President Lyndon B. Johnson to sign the Voting Rights Act of 1965. “The Pilgrimage to Selma was my crowning achievement,” Dr. Daniels commented when reflecting on this extraordinary experience.
Prior to being appointed Distinguished Lecturer at York College Dr. Daniels served as the first African American Executive Director of the Center for Constitutional Rights from 1993 – 2005. He was Executive Director of the National Rainbow Coalition and Deputy Campaign Manager for Rev. Jesse Jackson’s 1988 Presidential Campaign. He also ran as an Independent Candidate for President in 1992.
Dr. Daniels previously held teaching positions at Youngstown State University, Kent State University, Hiram College, College of Wooster and Cornell University. He is currently the Host of Vantage Point, a weekly issue-oriented talk show on WBAI, 99.5 FM on the Pacifica Network in New York and is an occasional Guest Host for Make It Plain with Mark Thompson on SIRIUSXM.
“I would like to express my profound appreciation to President Marcia Keizs and my colleagues in the Department of Behavioral Sciences for the honor and privilege of serving as York College’s first Distinguished Lecturer,” Dr. Daniels said. “I am not retiring from the movement, but will focus on building the Institute of the Black World 21st Century (IBW) as my legacy project in the winter of my life’s work.”
IBW is a progressive, African-centered, action-oriented Resource Center that promotes collaboration and operational unity to heal and empower Black families, communities and nations. Dr. Daniels will outline his plans for IBW during the Final Lecture.
