It’s a regular Wednesday night. You’re home with the wife and kids, having just eaten dinner. You’re helping to clear the table when one of the kids asks “anyone want to play cards?”.
You stop what you’re doing, turn to your kid and ask how he even knows what cards are. He shrugs, and says “I just do”. Hmmm, and you thought the idea of board games and card-playing were something of the past. Delighted that your child wants to spend some quality family time playing cards instead of sitting alone on the couch, glued to the television while texting his friends, you happily agree to play him cards. Before you know it, your wife has left the dishes and has joined in the fun, while your other kids have decided that they want in on the card-playing action too.
Board games are designed to bring people together. It’s a way for us to spend time with our friends and family in a friendly, competitive way. These games give us an outlet for which to use our minds and prove where our strengths lie. They help us forget about real life, and escape to a place of excitement and entertainment. The movie Life of a King, a janitor who has spent time in prison learns how to play chess. This janitor takes the detention class for underprivileged, African-American delinquent children, and begins to teach them respect and give them hope by turning these boring after-school punishment sessions into a learning and encouraging place.
Eventually, he opens a school of chess, giving back to underprivileged children who are in need of guidance and substance in their lives. This movie underlies some important points about board games in general – the unity, purpose and experience that one shares with others can break boundaries of discomfort or isolation and bring people together. This movie united African-American youth who otherwise had little reason to get up in the morning.
There are many classic feel-good board games available on the market that provide endless hours of family and friend fun, such as: Scrabble, Monopoly, Risk, and Cluedo. Wink Bingo offers the best in Bingo, where each game is different and unpredictable. The amount of fun to be shared is endless with these games, and has recently become more popular among our youth. So encourage your kids to play board games together. Let them form relationships with other kids and build on their confidence as they progress each round.
And the next time they tell you that they’re bored, suggest a little feel-good get-together and call over some friends for a games night and let the fun and games begin!
