On Thursday, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres told the Security Council that Haitians are experiencing a “perfect storm of suffering” as ongoing lawlessness and violence has displaced over a million Haitians.

Guterres spoke about the gang violence that is displacing Haitians.
“State authority is crumbling as gang violence engulfs Port-au-Prince and spreads beyond – paralyzing daily life and forcing families to flee,” said Guterres, highlighting the “appalling reports” of sexual violence. Guterres warned that schools and hospitals and facing relentless assaults while the rule of law is absent.
“The humanitarian toll is staggering: 1.3 million people – half of them children – have fled their homes. Six million people need humanitarian assistance,” Guterres said. “Haiti is now among the five global hunger hotspots of ‘highest concern.’”
Guterres pointed out that while humanitarian organizations are still on the ground, their efforts are being underfunded.
“Yet, Haiti remains shamefully overlooked and woefully underfunded,” he said. “Less than 10 per cent of the $908 million required to support 3.9 million people this year has been received – making Haiti the least funded humanitarian appeal in the world. This is not a funding gap. It is a life-and-death emergency. I urge all donors to act before lifesaving operations grind to a halt.”
