Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara, who previously stated that he would not seek reelection, is now again slated to run for the presidency in October.

Ouattara, who is 83, is now running for a fourth term.

Ouattara explained his broken promise by saying, “the constitution of our country allows me to serve another term, and my health permits it. Duty sometimes transcends a promise that was made in good faith.”

Ouattara also said he is running again because the nation was “facing unprecedented security, economic, and monetary challenges, the management of which requires experience.”

Tidjane Thiam, who was purportedly disqualified from running because of his dual citizenship status, even though he renounced his French citizenship, stated that “Today’s announcement by Ouattara constitutes a violation of our Constitution and a new attack on democracy.”

Ivorian politician Damana Adia Pickass, the former vice-president of Laurent Gbagbo, accused Ouattara of deceiving the nation saying:

“Despite all our warnings, it is clear the president’s word holds little weight. The president has deceived the entire nation, which is unacceptable. We will utilize every legal avenue available to ensure the constitution is upheld.”
