As per the data provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the US has recorded the highest number of Measles cases in the last 33 years. There were approximately 1,288 cases of measles recorded for this year till July 8. Moreover, the cases were around one-fourth of the number of cases recorded in 2024. The US has observed 27 outbreaks of Measles this year by now and 1,288 total cases by July 8. More than half of these cases are cases borne of the measles outbreak in the US.
From where did the Measles outbreak begin?
According to the Texas Health officials, the Measles outbreak began in the areas of West Texas where the population was not vaccinated. From January, around 753 out of 1,288 cases were reported from these areas. Till now, two deaths of school-aged children have been reported in these areas, as they were not vaccinated. According to the officials, the US can expect the measles outbreak to last for a year before showing any signs of improvement.
The outbreak is spreading across borders of countries and states, such as New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Kansas, causing an increase in the measles cases. All three places have reported 95, 87, and 17 cases this year due to the measles outbreak.
The Health and Human Services Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has been an active researcher of anti-vaccination. Due to the increasing measles outbreak cases, he has fired all 17 members of the Federal Vaccine Advisory Panel for irresponsibility. To replace them, he has hired people who have their own strong views on anti-vaccination to tackle the situation.
Why is the Measles Outbreak spreading in the US?
Measles has no treatment, being a disease caused by a virus, and thus, the only save is to be vaccinated. In 2000, the US declared that Measles had been eradicated from the nation due to its strong run of vaccines. Then, how did Measles manage to enter the country’s boundaries again? Even if the country is free of Measles, the unvaccinated foreign travelers from different countries are not. Unvaccinated individuals can be infected with Measles, which leads to the spread of an outbreak in the country.
West Texas has been affected by the spread of the Measles outbreak in its unvaccinated regions. However, the spread is mainly due to the presence of a Mennonite Community.
According to Dr. Peter Hotez, measles takes the medium of an unvaccinated person to spread. However, the condition worsens when a large portion of the population is unvaccinated. In such a case, Measles quickly spreads among that population and turns into an outbreak. This is because of its high transmissivity, which causes it to spread at such a speed.
What steps can be taken to end an outbreak?
The CDC considers a situation like now, a measles outbreak, when three or more such cases are identified in a geographic area. If a country wants to end a measles outbreak, it must vaccinate the individuals in the outbreak-affected area. In addition, prevention measures should be taken in the affected areas to stop the spread of Measles cases.
To end an outbreak, you need to vaccinate the public with the help of highly sustained baseline measles vaccines. Other than that, the public should focus on increasing their immunity to fight the pandemic. Through a hard vaccination, only 93% to 95% of the immunity rate can be fixed.
If most people are vaccinated, how are they affected by Measles?
While the measles vaccine is safe and effective in fighting the disease, it can still enter your body. The Measles vaccine is injected in two doses, with a 93% protective dose and a 97% protective dose. The first dose is about 93% effective against Measles, while the second dose increases the effectiveness to 97%. In such a case, a person can get affected by Measles if they are exposed to 3 of 100 people with the disease. The measles vaccine works by boosting your immunity against the Measles virus. However, it doesn’t seem to work much this time, as the immunity system of individuals is failing them. Even after that, the vaccinated population will be less affected by the illness and will recover within a few days.
What are the symptoms of Measles?
The initial symptoms start appearing in a person after a week or two of a carrier’s contact. If you are looking for the initial signs or symptoms, they are as follows:
- High Fever
- Tiredness
- Cough
- Running nose
- Red or bloody eyes
After around 3 days of these signs showing up, some tiny white spots will start appearing inside the mouth. After approximately five days, your body will start developing big, red rashes, which last up to 7 to 10 days. Moreover, the spread begins 4 days before the rash develops and lasts for 4 days of recovery.
Conclusion
Vaccination is vital for protecting yourself from dangerous diseases such as Measles, Mumps, etc. Your irresponsibility not only puts you in danger, but also all the people around you in danger too. In this difficult situation, you should act responsibly as a citizen and follow the instructions given by your authorities with obedience.
