12 Years Takes Top Picture Oscars As Lupita Wins Best Supporting Role

12 Years A Slave won the Best Picture honors at the Oscars and Lupita Nyongo won for Best supporting actress in her role as Patsey; John Ridley also won the Best screen adaptation honors for the movie.

Nyongo, a Kenyan who now lives in the United States, won in her first major starring role.

She most recently had emerged as a favorite after winning the Screen Actors Guild awards and the Broadcast Film Critics Association Award.

The film “12 Years a Slave” is about the true story of Solomon Northup, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, a free Black man who was kidnapped from the North and sold into slavery down South. 

This was the 86th Academy Awards.
