Tuesday night was a massive win for Democrats and progressives in the U.S. – a blue tsunami that exceeded expectations. It was a rebuke of Donald Trump and his cronies’ bigotry, including their anti-DEI crusade, their anti-immigrant rhetoric, and their blatant misogyny.

You’ve probably heard about the big races – Abdul El-Sayed’s major win in Michigan, James Talarico in Texas, Keisha Lance Bottoms in Georgia – but there are a whole host of other major victories you may have missed that show not only how massive this blue tsunami was, but just how unsuccessful Trump’s anti-DEI campaign and racist policies have been. Here are nine of them:

1. Black Women Make History in Georgia

Georgia voters not only elected the country’s first Black woman governor, but they also chose Penny Brown Reynolds as the state’s first Black woman elected as secretary of state and Tanya Miller as Georgia’s first Black woman attorney general. Miller will also be the first woman to serve as Georgia’s attorney general.

2. First Gen Z Woman Elected to Congress

Colorado’s 29-year-old Melat Kiros – an Ethiopian immigrant and Democratic socialist – became the first Gen-Z woman to be elected to the U.S. House.

3. Dems Flip Wisconsin Legislature

For the first time in 16 years, Democrats won control of the Wisconsin Legislature, giving Governor-elect David Crowley – who will be the state’s first Black governor – a Democratic trifecta in the crucial swing state.

4. Native American Women Make History

New Mexico Democrat Deb Haaland became the first Native American woman in U.S. history to be elected as governor, while Minnesota’s Democrat Peggy Flanagan became the first Native American woman to win a U.S. Senate seat.

5. Doctor Who Treated Patients in Gaza Sees Historical Win in New Jersey

Egyptian-American doctor and Iraq War veteran Adam Hamawy – who treated patients in Gaza and saved Senator Tammy Duckworth’s life during the Iraq War – became the first Muslim in New Jersey to be elected to U.S. Congress, despite the openly Islamophobic campaign against him.

6. Democratic Women Take Nearly One-Fourth of House Seats

For the first time in U.S. history, at least 100 Democratic women are expected to serve in the U.S. House come January.

7. Dems Flip 16 State House Seats in Missouri

In a state Trump won by over 18 points in 2024, Democrats in Missouri flipped 16 state House seats, ending 14 years of the Republicans’ supermajority in the state House and Senate.

8. Surprise Wins in Solid Red States

Democrats Zach Dembo of Kentucky, Fred Wellman of Missouri, and J.D. Ford of Indiana flipped U.S. House seats in states that Trump won easily back in 2024. Ford also made history by becoming Indiana’s first openly gay man elected to Congress.

9. Georgia State House Poised to Flip Blue

While votes are still being tallied, Democrats in Georgia are currently expected to win the state House for the first time in over two decades.
