Review of 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 8

The new episode “Wannabes” is the 9-1-1 midseason finale. Involving several emotional highs and narrative lows, it focuses on Eddie and his trials as a father. This episode focuses on Eddie’s narrative. So, it is a well-thought-out part of the series. But, the plots about Brad and Athena’s police car feel stretched. They sometimes undermine the show’s effect.

However, Athena’s subplot takes a long time and it overshadows Brad’s long-awaited moment in the spotlight. His character’s arc ends pleasantly. It helps Eddie return to his son, Chris. Despite Brad’s admirable intentions, it is easy to see how unlike he is from Eddie. Whereas Eddie is unwavering in his devotion to his son, Brad has let his regular life get in the way of his priorities. Eddie has incorporated being a loving parent, and this episode is a testimony to it.

The story becomes more estranged because of Eddie’s predicament over moving to Texas. He feels trapped in his situation. Moving may not be wise, but it shows his intention to support Chris. Eddie’s parents, however, are missing from this episode, but their influence is felt. The family dynamic has grown edgy over the seasons. Their deep fondness for Chris, possibly more than for Eddie, reflects this. This episode suggests that Eddie’s parents are overcoming their past errors. Their love for Chris gives them a chance to fix their blunders.

The talk Eddie has with Buck augments the emotional impact of his likely transfer. Eddie expected a warning against such a change. So, he is staggered by Buck’s reassurance when he divulges his plans to meet a realtor. It is an integral moment in the show as it depicts Buck’s growth. He is ready to place Chris’s welfare first, even if it means approving a choice that might make Eddie leave the 118. The beautiful relationship between Eddie and Buck is a major turning point in this episode.

Conclusion

As Buck is struggling with the loss of his best friend, his face changes from a smile to a frown.  As the episode unfolds, it shows his worry over Eddie’s possible transfer. This scene is momentous for the fans as it shows their affinity for each other. It also shows how Eddie’s choices matter in Buck’s life. A strong directing choice focuses on Buck’s face at this point. It beautifully covers his emotional struggle as he comes to terms with this new piece of information. “Wannabes” has a varied bag of plotlines, some of which seem less exciting than others. But, Eddie’s journey and his tumultuous relationships, particularly with Buck will forever be engaging. It is what keeps fans hooked on the series.
