53 Years Of Independence: New York Celebrates “Passport To Nigeria”

Between October 1 and October 5, New Yorkers Explore and Enjoy Nigerian Culture, Cuisine, and Entertainment during NYC’s Passport to Nigeria Event Series.

This year as Nigeria celebrates its 53rd year of Independence, Nigerians in New York City will get a chance to commemorate Nigeria during NYC’s Annual Passport to Nigeria affair, a week-long celebration of music, culture, and cuisine from October 1 to 5.

Curated and disseminated annually by Royalty Lifestyle Group (RLG), the first strategic segment marketing firm for Pan-African brands, Passport to Nigeria connects Nigerians and friends of Nigerians in the New York City Metropolitan Area to a week of specially designed events, from food and wine tasting events at select restaurants in NYC, to networking events and live music performances at various nightlife destination venues.

This year, Passport to Nigeria kicks off with a #Passport2Nigeria digital party event entitled “Happy Birthday, Nigeria” on Tuesday, October 1. Join the #Passport2Nigeria cyber party on Facebook and Twitter in celebration of the 53rd birthday of the Republic of Nigeria, from 12AM to 11:59PM on October 1st.

On Wednesday, October 2, Passport to Nigeria takes New Yorkers on a culinary journey across Nigeria. Sponsored by Buka Restaurant, one three restaurants in NYC offering authentic Nigerian dishes in a relaxed setting, “A Taste of Naija” will feature food and wine tastings, samples of other wines from Africa, and musical sounds from one of Africa’s biggest musicians, Fela Kuti. On Thursday, October 3, Applause Africa, a communications company that celebrates, empowers and connects the people, culture, and ambitions of Africans in Diaspora, will host Cocktails & Conversation V3.0 at LA NUIT (1134 First Avenue, New York, NY), from 6PM until 11PM. The networking affair, which features Career Success Catalyst, Jimi Tewe, is a dynamic platform for Africans alike to interact, reconnect and celebrate Nigeria. Tickets start at $10.

On Friday, October 4, Industry Nite, Nigeria’s weekly event that hosts events for up-and-coming and established artists, as well as record label executives, brand managers and fans around the world, delivers Industry Nite New York, a one-night only concert and party with guest appearances by award-winning artists in the African music industry such as MayD, Ayo Jay and Lynxx. On Saturday, October 5 from 11AM until 7PM, join Nigerians and friends of Nigeria in a carnival style celebration of Nigeria’s 53rd independence. The celebration, produced by the Organization for the Advancement of Nigerians (OAN), will kick off at 54th street and 2nd Avenue and end on DAG HAMMARSKJOLD PLAZA on 42nd St and 2nd Avenue. Later that evening on Saturday October 5, from 10PM until 4AM, Passport to Nigeria will close out the week with two Independence Parade celebration parties at the iconic Carlton Hotel located at 88 Madison Avenue, New York, NY and Maru, located at 11 West 32nd Street, New York, NY. The events will feature music by AfroBeats pioneer DJ Universe and award winning deejay, DJ Zimo. Advance tickets to both celebration parties start at $35.
