NYC’s premiere Brazilian music and arts festival BRASIL SUMMERFEST returns July 20-27, 2013 to treat fans to a sampling of some of Brazil’s most dynamic music artists, demonstrating the richness and diversity of the country’s contemporary music scene. The weeklong festival, “will once again showcase a diverse array of styles from the traditional rhythms of samba, forro and bossanova, to emerging contemporary scenes such as tecnobrega, Brazilian hip hop [and] indie, among others” the New York Times noted.
BRASIL SUMMERFEST will take place at several high profile venues in Manhattan including Central Park Summerstage, City Winery, Joe’s Pub, South Street Seaport, Nublu, Standard East, Brooklyn Public Library, with more to be added. On opening day at Central Park SummerStage, July 20, the stellar lineup will include the US debut of the show stopping performer Gaby Amarantos, the Belem-born queen of Tecnobrega-a style fusing samba with high-powered synth-driven pop. [She] has been touted as the “Brazilian Beyonce.” The other artists sharing the bill include the acclaimed Sao Paulo rapper/MC, Emicida, who was the first Brazilian rapper to play Coachella and has taken the festival circuit by storm, including SXSW and Back2Black in London. [He] was also part of the acclaimed benefit compilation Red Hot + Rio 2 (2011), and the pioneering Brazilian rap rock group Planet Hemp. The performance reunites the group with founding member star rapper Marcelo D2 and BNegão as the lead vocalists in the band.
Other exciting performances confirmed include the enchanting pop-centric singer/songwriter Tulipa Ruiz at City Winery Outdoors July 23, a daytime samba extravaganza at the South Street Seaport on July 21, singer/songwriter Alexia Bomtempo at the Standard East on July 26, and Eliano Bráz Forro Fidler at Brooklyn Public Library.
