Analyzing trading must be viewed as part of the solution in tackling the global plastic pollution problem.

This is part of the message, and judgement, rendered on Thursday, by UN trade and development body, UNCTAD, during the final round of discussions regarding the crafting of international legal measures to address the plastic pollution crisis.
In a statement, UNCTAD said, “Although plastics are directly linked to the triple planetary crisis – pollution, biodiversity loss, and climate change – there is still no comprehensive international treaty governing their composition, design, production, trade, and disposal.”
UNCTAD says plastic pollution is a threat to human welfare, including to human food systems. This is particularly the case in developing countries and on islands. In 2023, the production of plastics rose to 436 million metric tonnes globally. Some 75 percent of plastics become waste products.
UNCTAD is recommending the implementation of both tariff and non-tariff initiatives to buttress ecological replacements to plastics, which can be found in other natural sources. 98 percent of plastics are now extracted from fossil fuels.
